In family law forms circles, the old joke that it’s cheaper to keep your spouse than to divorce him or her still makes the rounds. It applies as much to the amount you will spend in lawyer’s fees for a divorce as to how much of “your” assets will be shared with your soon-to-be “Ex.”

Although most divorces will not be like The Donald and Ivana Trump divorce, the reality is that even a “simple” divorce can cost you quite a penny unless you’re willing to put some effort and use resources which courts have in place to help those who want to represent themselves–known as pro se parties.

Career Legal Advise

Tip number 1

“Never marry a miner”

That legal advise was from a most unlikely source and was totally unsolicited. I started my legal advise career in Pontefract, a close-knit mining community which, in the 1970’s, was recovering from the trauma of the miners’ strike. As an articled clerk, I was regularly dispatched to Leeds for County Court directions hearings. Appearing before the Senior Registrar with some trepidation, he suddenly fixed his beady eye on me, demanded to know which firm I represented and then barked to my consternation “Never marry a miner!”

Tip number 2

There are a variety of reasons why launching their own law firm salaries can be an attractive proposition for qualified lawyers: greater flexibility and the ability to determine their own career path, family needs and lifestyle choices, having the opportunity to handle complex cases which would be taken on by senior personnel of a bigger organization, develop a distinctive and individual professional persona, avoid the uncertainties and vagaries that are usual in employer-employee dealings, bypass the office politics that are usual in any large organization, develop direct and solid client relationships, and enjoy the satisfaction of building their own practice. If you are entrepreneurial minded and are about to embark on launching your own law firm salaries, here are a few pointers to keep in mind.

Marcello Asked:

I have a very large, extremely winnable potential class action against a major American corporation. I don’t want to deal with an attorney looking for a few bucks from me, because this is a legitimate actionable behavior on the corporation’s part and I can’t afford to mount a suit on my own. I’d need to find a class action attorney who is ethical, brave and competent (the defendent will have corporate resources) and innovative (someone who’s stupid won’t begin to grasp the technical intricacies of the case, let alone win it). Any reasonable, responsible suggestions?
